Why WhatsApp ruins photo quality, and how to send photos in full quality

WhatsApp shrinks photos to about 1600 px, or 4096 px in HD. Here's what Standard and HD really do, how to send the original file on Android and iPhone, and what Indian photographers send instead.

Quick answer

WhatsApp resizes and recompresses every photo sent normally, to about 1,600 pixels on the long side in Standard quality and about 4,096 pixels in HD. To send the untouched original, attach the photo as a Document, which keeps files up to 2 GB as they are. For hundreds of photos, send one gallery link instead.

You took a sharp photo. You sent it on WhatsApp. Your friend says it looks blurry. Nothing is wrong with either phone: WhatsApp shrank the photo on the way.

India has more WhatsApp users than any other country, so this is how most wedding and family photos travel. Here's what WhatsApp does to them, the settings that help, and the one method that sends the original.

What does WhatsApp do to your photos?

When you send a photo the normal way, WhatsApp:

  1. Resizes it. In Standard quality the long side becomes about 1,600 pixels. A 24-megapixel camera photo is about 6,000 pixels wide, so most of the detail is thrown away.
  2. Recompresses it as a lower-quality JPEG.
  3. Strips most metadata, like camera settings and location.

That's the right trade-off for a quick photo of lunch, and the wrong one for wedding photos someone spent weeks editing. You see it in skin tones, dark backgrounds, mehendi patterns and fine details like jewellery and zari work.

Standard vs HD vs Document: what's the difference?

How you send Approx. size of long side Original file? Good for
Standard quality ~1,600 px No Quick chats
HD quality ~4,096 px No, still recompressed Viewing on phones
As a Document Unchanged Yes, up to 2 GB per file Prints, albums, editing
A gallery link Unchanged Yes Many photos, many people

How to set HD quality as the default

On recent versions: Settings → Storage and data → Media upload quality → HD quality. Menu names vary slightly by version.

HD is fine for viewing on a phone. It's not fine for printing or an album.

How to send the original photo on WhatsApp

Send it as a Document. WhatsApp sends documents as they are, up to 2 GB each.

On Android

  1. Open the chat and tap the paperclip icon.
  2. Choose Document.
  3. Tap Browse other docs and pick the photo from your gallery or files.
  4. Send.

On iPhone

  1. Save the photo to the Files app (in Photos, tap Share → Save to Files).
  2. In the chat, tap + and choose Document.
  3. Pick the photo from Files and send.

The receiver sees a file instead of a preview and has to tap to open it. That's the trade-off.

Why WhatsApp doesn't work for a whole wedding

Documents are fine for five photos. For 5,000:

  • Each guest downloads every file, on phones that often have only a few GB free.
  • Nobody can find themselves without scrolling through all of them.
  • Family groups bury the photos under hundreds of "good morning" messages.

This is why photographers send one link on WhatsApp instead of the photos. The link opens an online gallery in original quality, previews load fast, and each guest takes a selfie to see only their own photos. More in how to share wedding photos with guests.

For photographers: a better WhatsApp workflow

  1. Post 20 to 30 highlights in the family group, in HD, as a teaser.
  2. Follow with the gallery link and one line: "Tap, take a selfie, see your photos."
  3. Turn off guest downloads if you like, or allow them at web size.
  4. Deliver full-resolution files to the couple through the gallery, not the chat.

Frequently asked questions

Why does WhatsApp reduce photo quality?

To keep chats fast and save mobile data, WhatsApp resizes photos sent normally (about 1,600 px in Standard, 4,096 px in HD) and recompresses them.

How do I send photos on WhatsApp without losing quality?

Attach the photo as a Document (paperclip or + icon, then Document). Documents are sent unchanged, up to 2 GB per file.

Is WhatsApp HD quality the original photo?

No. HD photos are sharper than Standard but still resized and recompressed. Only sending as a Document keeps the original.

How do I make HD the default on WhatsApp?

Go to Settings → Storage and data → Media upload quality and choose HD quality.

Can I print photos received on WhatsApp?

Standard-quality photos look soft in prints above postcard size. HD can work for small prints. For albums and large prints, ask for the original file.

What is the best way to send many photos in full quality?

Share a link to an online gallery. A wedding gallery with face search is best for many people, because each person sees only the photos they're in.
